We worked with this client in 2007 to locate an appropriate Midcentury Modern house for restoration as the home for a magazine editor and his wife. The house was in poor condition, literally a "diamond in the rough”, and we carried out a relatively modest restoration The client moved in during 2008, and the house was featured in Elle Décor magazine in the fall of 2010.
Within weeks of the Elle Décor article, the house was very seriously damaged by fire, and we were re-hired to carry out a fire restoration along with enlarging and improving the house. Both because of the extent of the damage, and because of livability problems related to obsolete constructional conditions in the original structure, the new restoration included extensive adaptations to bring the house up to a current livability standard. We also reconsidered a number of design features while being mindful of the highly specific design ethic that did exist – and now continues to exist – in the house.
As part of our work, we redesigned the way the house interacts with a very rugged site. The redesigned house was featured in the New York Times in 2013.
